“I live in Perth and went to Glasgow Caledonian University to study game design. The course covered programming and understanding different computer systems, but also covered areas like art and psychology, understanding how to manipulate and enhance the user experience. The final year of my degree was during lockdown, it was a strange time and I ended up moving back to Perth.

“Game design is a difficult industry to get into, so after my degree I worked as an IT Support Specialist for a managed IT services provider in Perth. The role involved supporting other businesses with their IT issues. Each business had its own systems and ways of working, and would come to us needing help with their specific piece of software. As a team, we had knowledge across a range of systems but if it was a niche piece of software, we’d do the research and work out how to fix the issue. As a small company and a small team, it was often a case of ‘learn as you go’, and trying various solutions until we were able to find the one that worked.

“Working in an IT role, my working day is spent in front of a screen so I try to disconnect and keep active outside of work; going for walks or to the gym and seeing friends. I like history and would love to visit the ancient Greek archaeological sites.

“Living in Perth, I’d seen the Perth Gift Card, now the Perth City & Towns Gift Card. I think the Town & City Gift Card concept is a really cool idea because it makes you want to look up the businesses in a specific area. I feel like if I got a gift card for a big brand, I’d go into the store knowing exactly what I’d spend whereas with a Town & City Gift Card I’d be more open to exploring different businesses and seeing where I could spend it.

“I saw the IT Technician role at Miconex and like the look of the company and its culture. The role is similar to my previous role but offers a new challenge and the chance to get involved in some interesting development projects. In the early days, I’ll be reviewing systems and looking at areas where we can improve efficiency. I’m excited to see what comes next.”
