Troubleshooting why your card may have declined at store

There may be various reasons your card has declined at payment:

  • Not enough balance - your card may only have some funds available for the amount you need to pay. If this is the case, the business should complete a 'split payment. To do this they should take the amount remaining on your gift card first, and then put through the remaining balance using another payment method (card or cash).

  • Not swiped properly - has the card swiped properly on the machine? If not, you may need to input the card details instead of swiping to process the payment.
  • Multiple sales in a quick succession at same terminal - have you put through more than 10 transactions in the last hour? If so your card may be flagged by the merchant provider in case of anti money laundering. Please ask the business to contact their merchant provider to notify them this is a genuine payment.
