About us

Miconex’s mission is simple: providing communities with a tangible means to retain spend in their local area by diverting spend back into local businesses of all types and sizes, helping people to explore the places where they live and work, and positively connect with their community. By amplifying the local proposition, Miconex makes local shopping not only easy for customers but desirable, driving the evolution of high streets and downtowns worldwide.

After developing the UK’s first city-wide Gift Card program Town & City Gift Cards in Perth in 2015, Miconex has gone on to become one of the fastest growing Scottish fintechs. Miconex’s Town & City Gift Card and Downtown Gift Card programs are active in 200+ places in the UK, Ireland, Canada and the USA. Over 20,000 businesses are part of Miconex’s programs, with over £79million in local spend delivered to date.

Miconex announced £24m in local Gift Card sales in 2025, an increase of 60% on 2024, as shoppers make the move to local Gift Cards to show support for local businesses. Miconex estimates that the £24m will drive 486,000 specific visits to high streets and shopping districts in 2026, based on estimates of 3 trips into town per Gift Card.

Unlike competitors in the Gift Card industry, Miconex’s technology is place specific and backed by an experienced implementation team, with full technical program setup, materials, support and an industry leading client success program.

Miconex’s Town & City Gift Card and Downtown Gift Card programs are multi-award winning. In 2025, Miconex were a finalist in the Team of the Year category in the Gift Card and Voucher Association (GCVA) Hall of Games awards. In 2024, Miconex picked up the ‘A Force For Good’ award at the 2024 PayTech awards for their commitment to positively impacting people, places and businesses. In 2025, Miconex built on the success of its digital gifting product in Europe by launching digital Gift Card technology in Canada and the USA, alongside EML Payments. The launch included the introduction of digital e-cards and the tokenization of physical cards, both allowing Miconex’s Downtown Gift Cards to be added to digital wallets, enabling contactless payment technology. Miconex gained significant traction in North America in 2025, with programs totalling 41 across 9 provinces in Canada, and 27 programs across 14 states in the USA.

In Scotland, the trailblazing Scotland Loves Local Gift Card continues to go from strength to strength. Since the launch of the Scotland Loves Local Gift Card in 2021, an extraordinary £16m has been locked into the country through the initiative. Around 7,000 businesses across Scotland accept the card. In 2022, as the cost of living crisis took hold, 6 local authorities used the physical Scotland Loves Local Gift Card to distribute LACER funding, providing targeted support for businesses and communities.

In Ireland, the ‘shop local’ revolution is gathering pace with 16 Town & City Gift Card programs in the country in 2025. In 2025, the Irish Town & City Gift Cards network announced €17.4m in sales in the country in 2025, an increase of 65% on 2024, and up from €7m in 2023.
